Why do blogs have two wide bars of empty space on both sides?

It seems those margins are left for other links such as links to friends' blogs, list of your own blogs, your pic, and perhaps ads from Y! and Google networks as well. There are many blogs that I saw on Wordpress that did not have the margins that you talk about. Only that many themes are designed so.

Reply:not all do actually, that depends on the design or the template used for the blog.. in fact many websites do have those spaces on both sides...
